During their work time, family practice doctors may see about 20 to 25 patients a day and there are some doctors who even see about 30 patients a day.  The physicians however have the ability to admit patients to hospitals over phones and are required to be in the hospital when paged about his presence in the hospital.

Most of the patients of family practice doctors come for issues such as immunization, common skin issues, colds, flu, allergies, hypertension, dietary problems and so forth. Each and every of the patients have a patient chart that the physician reviews.

The symptoms and signs of health related issues are first recorded by nurse or assistant and then examined by the physician. Physician then provides treatment or asks for further tests to be conducted. However, if the patients require further specialized treatment, the family physician refers the patients to specialists or to surgeons.

Annually, family physician earns an average salary that ranges from 160000 dollars to above 175000 dollars. The earnings of family practice doctors vary depending on factors such as town size, partnership with hospital or other physicians, location of practice etc.
