American College of Physicians – Working Together for the Progress of Medicine
When it comes to combining traditional values and modern practices, the American College of Physicians is one of the top names in today’s medicine, a label for tradition, capability and professionalism, brought to extreme by names and personalities carved into the medical history.
The American College of Physicians – Short History
This institution was established almost a hundred years ago, having as main purpose the improvement of the population’s general state of health. Its members were from the beginning interested in discovering and promoting new and revolutionary methods that would help them achieve their goal, the organization becoming the symbol of their hopes and dreams, but also the tool that was going to ensure their success.
It is therefore of no surprise that, ever since it was started, the American College of Physicians began to finance and organize valuable study and research campaigns meant to analyze the causes of various diseases, their evolution, and to discover the most effective treatments and prevention methods.
Consequently, books and studies were published in the association’s magazine, gaining the recognition of a wide medical community and crossing the limits of what that time’s medicine took for granted.
Today, the institution numbers over 130,000 members around the whole country, being one of the largest associations in its field. Other medical associations that shared the same objectives have joined the American College of Physicians along the way, turning it in one of the most well represented organizations. Its members are present in the most important boards, medical departments and councils, having important things to say and the ability to influence life changing decisions on an international level.
The American College of Physicians – Structure, Membership, Activities
The institution is led by a board of Regents elected by all the members, based on experience, skills, commitments and achievements. The Regents are continuously supported, helped and advised by several committees, throughout every step of their difficult but rewarding mission.
An important structure is also the Board of Governors, composed of 79 members elected by all the members of the association as well, as the supreme proof of a democratic and well balanced structure.
The members of the organization are generally doctors practicing internal medicine, or students who intend to specialize in this particular field. However, there are some exceptions to the rule.
The first exception states that, in order to become a member of this association, it isn’t necessary for the person in cause to posses a board certificate attesting the specialization.
Also, there are rules that allow people who are not qualified in internal medicine to become members of the association despite of their situation. However, these special categories are strictly limited by the internal regulations.
There are different membership levels inside the American College of Physicians. For each of those, there are some standard procedures that must be followed step by step by the person who wants to join the organization. Among these procedures and requirements, the most important is the necessity of having a previous recommendation from one of the older members who live in your area.
It is also stipulated that all the aspiring members at a certain point should be evaluated by a special designated committee that will make a decision on whether to grant their membership or not, after carefully examining all the aspects of their medical activity, scientific studies and research, but also of their moral values and society behavior patterns.
All the important work and contribution of the members at the progress and development of different subspecialties in internal medicine are revealed through different medical magazines and electronic portals of the organization, but also through the media channels of the numerous other foundations and research centers it sponsors.
This way, new and innovative methods of preventing and treating different illnesses, some of them considered fatal not long ago, are discovered every year. It would not be far from the truth to say that the war for health will never be over.
However, as the American College of Physicians shows, every small victory is a step forward, a dose of motivation and confidence gained, while every set back should be used as a life lesson and exploited to the full.
